Blackhawk Nation,
Winter weather has arrived in Wisconsin and we would like to ensure you are informed of our lines of communication in case we need to cancel school due to weather or other related emergencies.
How is the decision made to close school because of inclement weather?
An analysis of all relevant factors play into the decision-making and includes:
-The actual amount of snow and ice;
-Notices from the bus company and other agencies regarding road conditions;
-Staff analysis of major routes;
-Probability of precipitation/accumulation;
-Conditions of parking and sidewalks;
-Time to effectively clear parking and sidewalk spaces for safety;
-Conditions on site (if we have heat, power...);
-Consultation with other districts surrounding our district.
When is the decision made?
The goal is always to make a decision as soon as possible. In most cases, a decision will be made by 6:00 a.m. or earlier as buses leave for routes around this time and to provide ample time to notify radio and television stations listed below. If school is canceled, the district will notify all families and staff using our automated messaging system and post on district social media.

Safety of Students and Staff
The safety of everyone is always priority #1. When making the call to cancel school, we will strive to err on the side of caution to maintain this priority. Policy 5200, concerning attendance, outlines that a student may be excused from school if, “in a parent’s reasonable judgment, weather conditions are a danger to the health and welfare or safety of the student.” Attendance is important, but safety should always be the priority for your student. A student driver does not have the same experience as a professional bus driver. This is especially true for young drivers who have not experienced the changing road conditions a Wisconsin winter can bring. Ensuring all students arrive and return from school safely is paramount. Thank you for your assistance this winter season.
Respectfully,
Dr. Josh Isaacson
District Administrator
